Remove the background from an image online: the complete guide

Removing a photo's background is one of the most commonly searched editing tasks: profile pictures, product listings, game avatars, presentation material, or simply isolating a person from a background that doesn't look right. Traditionally this required cutting out the subject by hand with a pen tool in a photo editor — a slow process even for someone experienced. This tool does it automatically using an artificial intelligence model that runs directly in your browser.

How automatic background removal works

The model behind this tool (called MODNet) was trained specifically to recognize people and portraits: it analyzes the image pixel by pixel and calculates which part belongs to the main subject and which is background, producing a precise transparency mask even in tricky areas like loose hair or clothing edges. All of that computation happens on your own device, using your computer's or phone's processor or graphics card — no image is sent to an external server.

When it works best (and when it doesn't)

Since the model is trained mainly on photos of people, it gets its best results on portraits and photos where a person is the main subject. On photos of standalone objects or products it can work reasonably well, but edges often need a bit of manual touch-up afterward in an image editor. We'd rather tell you this clearly upfront than have you find out by surprise: if your main use case is product photos for a catalog, test with one sample image first to confirm the result works for you.

Transparent PNG or a background color

The result is always generated with a transparency channel (PNG format), ideal for placing the image over any background in a website, a document, or a design. If you'd rather have a solid background instead of transparency, you can pick a color right before downloading — white for e-commerce-style product listings, a brand color for social media, or any custom shade using the color picker.

The first run takes a little longer

The first time you use the tool, your browser needs to download the AI model (about 13 MB) and the engine that runs it. That's a one-time download: after that it's cached in your browser, and the next times you remove a background the process is much faster. If your browser supports WebGPU (recent Chrome and Edge), processing uses your graphics card and is even quicker.

Privacy for personal photos

Photos with people in them — portraits, profile pictures, family photos — are exactly the kind of content you'd rather not upload to an unknown server. Since all the processing happens in your own browser through locally-run AI, your photo never travels over the internet at any point in the process.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with any type of photo?
It works best with people and portraits, which is what the model is trained for. On objects or products it may need some manual touch-up around the edges.
What format do I get the result in?
A transparent PNG, or with the solid background color you choose before downloading.
Why does the first time take a bit longer?
The first time you use the tool, your browser downloads the AI model (about 13 MB) and the engine that runs it; after that it's cached and later uses are much faster.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The AI model runs entirely in your browser; your photo never leaves your device.
